Things to Do

Beaches

There's no place like home. Except the beach
Sri Lanka beaches are well known worldwide. The ocean completely encircles the island and is a brilliant blue color. In reality, there are many hotels located close to the beaches. Even some beaches have historical value. Another reason to choose this island as your top vacation spot is the stunning, breathtaking, and panoramic views of the western, southern, eastern, and northern beaches.

Hiriketiya

Travelers seeking refuge from the expanding development further to the west are increasingly frequenting the area around Dikwella on the south shore.

The coastline is dotted with a number of reasonably pristine beaches, most notably the gorgeous little horseshoe bay at Hiriketiya, which is surrounded by a small number of excellent lodging options. Three minutes walk from the beach is where you should try The Salty Pelican Yoga & Surf Retreat.

Bentota

One of Sri Lanka's top beaches is Bentota. It is located on the west coast, extends south from the stunning Bentota lagoon, and is surrounded by a number of attractive hotels.

Some of the most enticing upmarket lodgings along this coastline can be found towards the southernmost end of the beach. A variety of stylish boutique hotels, like Centara Ceysands Resort & Spa, are tucked away among the palm palms.

The watersports capital of Sri Lanka is Bentota. Boat tours up the river to explore the mangroves and confusing waterways are simple to organize, and the calm waters of the lagoon behind the beach are ideal for kayaking and jet-skiing.

One of the most fascinating tourist sites in Sri Lanka is the temple because the architecture is stunning and the ceremonies held there are fascinating to observe.

Arugam Bay

The settlement of Arugam Bay is a well-liked stop for independent tourists drawn by the allure of its lovely, palm-fringed beach at the southern end of the east coast.

In order to ride what is commonly regarded as some of the best waves in Sri Lanka, surfers first put the area on the map by traveling there. The beach continues to draw a large number of surfers, but its laid-back atmosphere and quirky charm appeal to a variety of people. Motorboat journeys out to sea in search of dolphins are easily organized, as are tours of the neighboring Pottuvil Lagoon. The neighborhood has effectively withstood the construction of large hotels. But eccentric rural guesthouses and unhurried seaside bungalows and cabanas provide a ton of casual overnight options.

Mirissa

The excellent sands at Mirissa Beach on the south coast are bordered by palm trees, and its clear waters and energetic waves make it a great place for swimming and surfing. But Mirissa's rise to prominence as Sri Lanka's center for whale-watching has been the driving force behind growth in this area.

It's not uncommon to see a lot of whales rather near to the coast. Additionally, numerous tour companies established in the hamlet provide boat tours to visit them from December to April.

A variety of lodging options are available close to Mirissa Beach at a collection of hotels and guesthouses. Try the quaint and relaxed Handagedara Resort, which is close to the Indian Ocean, gentle sands, and potential whale sightings.

Nilaveli and Uppuveli

The peaceful village of Uppuveli, located on Sri Lanka's east coast just north of Trincomalee, is a perfect choice if you want to see one of the country's top beaches without going far from the tourist trail.

The seemingly infinite swaths of fine white sand surrounding the coast remain impressively pristine due to its proximity to the old civil war zone. Despite the fact that the region is starting to have a reputation as a diving and whale-watching hotspot.

Uppuveli presently features a respectable assortment of guesthouses and informal hotels as a result of ongoing development. Just a short stroll away from the quiet coastline is the elegant Green Beach Resort.

Secret Beach

Image
Secret Beach Mirissa, is a small hidden beach with a bay area just around the corner from the town’s main beach, Mirissa Beach. Although Secret Beach is no longer much of a secret (and even has its location on google maps!) it should definitely be on your list of places to visit in Mirissa. While the beach has gained more popularity in recent years, it still doesn’t attract as many visitors as the main beach, so it is still somewhat of a hidden gem.

Pigeon Island

One of the island's more recent parks, the Pigeon Island National Park near Trincomalee, has quickly risen to prominence as one of the nation's most visited parks. The nature reserve, which consists of two islands joined by coral and was designated a national park in 2003, is home to a wide variety of marine creatures since the island's 100 or so coral varieties serve as the ideal habitat for many marine species. The islands were formerly a shooting range during the Second World War despite being teeming with rare and indigenous aquatic species.
